Should Nurseries Include a Plant Guarantee?
Buying a plant like buying/adopting a new pet. For those who are pet lovers, this may seem absurd; but as a plant and pet lover, I understand the connection.
When choosing a pet, you will take time finding a new friend that is healthy and take great care getting them home safely. Most likely you have done research on the care and feeding of your new dog or cat. You also know that once the pet is in your care (and car), you are solely responsible for its well being.
What about picking a new plant? Usually, you go to the nursery with a specific place you want to put a plant. With the help of the nursery staff, you choose the one that works best for your garden or needs. The nursery staff will also help to secure the plant for the journey home. And similarly to a new pet, once the plant is in your care (and car), you are solely responsible for its well being.
Plants can be fussy about where they are planted: some like it sunny, some shady; some sandy soil, some rich; some like it damp, others dry. Knowing these factors allows our nursery staff to help you select the right plant for your specific situation. Now, if you choose to stop for lunch on a hot summer day, would you expect your plant (or pet) to survive the 95 degree car without any sign of distress? If unsecured and wind whipped in the back of your pickup, will your plant (pet) have any damage? And again, just like your furry friend, if not provided the proper nutrients and care at home, do you think your plant will thrive?
See the similarities now? Unfortunately, far too often, plants are not afforded the same care as a new pet. Stress caused even before planting can result in the plant not performing as it should, or even die. For this reason, Four Season Nursery does not offer a guarantee once a plant leaves our nursery. We care deeply for plants and want them to thrive. We provide good advice regarding the care of your purchase, and help secure your new plant for a safe trip home. We are always available for questions on how to make sure your plants are happy and healthy, at any stage of their life.
Now, you probably won’t give the same amount of love to your plant as you do your pet, and we certainly don’t expect you to, but a little extra care will go a long way.
